What is TMJ & how can it be treated?

DIAGNOSIS & TREATMENT

The first step to successful treatment is for our team to properly diagnose the problem. This is achieved through visual examination. You will need to schedule an appointment with our team so that we can evaluate your oral and facial structures. Using advanced dental technology, we can easily pinpoint the problem area(s) and develop a personalized treatment plan.

EQUILIBRATION/ OCCLUSAL ADJUSTMENTS

TMJ is commonly caused by bite misalignment. If this is the reason for your pain, we can perform what is known as equilibration/occlusal adjustment. By altering the chewing surfaces of your existing teeth or reshaping any existing restorations, we can better align your bite to create optimal occlusion. This allows for your TMJs to work harmoniously and cohesively together.

OCCLUSAL SPLINTS

If further treatment is necessary, we can have an occlusal splint made, which is worn at night while you sleep. Not only is this helpful in treating TMJ, but it also minimizes the effects of bruxism or teeth grinding. As an oral appliance that is worn at night, it keeps teeth from touching and causing worn tooth enamel. It also shifts the jaw in such a way that promotes improved oral functioning and more relaxed jaw joints and muscles.
