When gum disease is no longer reversible but instead, requires more advanced treatments to rid the mouth of plaque and tartar, Dr. Walker can recommend scaling and root planing. A safe and effective solution to combat gum disease, he will begin by using special dental instruments to remove accumulated plaque and tartar around your teeth and above and below your gumline. When finished, he will then move on to smoothing the tooth root to encourage gum reattachment while also minimizing the chance of future reinfection.
Once you develop periodontal disease, it is necessary that you keep up with your oral hygiene through periodontal maintenance. Apart from taking steps to improve your at-home brushing, flossing, and rinsing routine, you’ll also need to come in more frequently to see Dr. Walker to ensure no bacteria is forming and that there is no infection within your soft oral tissues. Typically, periodontal patients need to see their dentist every three months instead of every six months.
